French thrusts north and north-east around Combles were a vital aspect of the Morval battle. But the slowing of the French on the narrow front of advance involving the capture of Fregicourt resulted in their request to Haig, on the evening of the 25 September, to move French troops through Morval, providing more room for manoeuvre, en route to threaten Sailly-Sallisel. The formal extension of the French line into the extreme right of the former XIV Corps area was carried out on 28 September.
