Mouquet Farm (known to the troops as 'Mucky Farm' and, particularly by the Australians, as 'Moo Cow Farm') had been converted by the Germans into a heavily defended fortress position protecting the western and north-western approaches to Thiepval. The farm's defensive works included a system of deep underground chambers and interconnecting subterranean passages with numerous exits and entrances.
