The windmill (with a German defensive bunker constructed at its base) was eventually reduced to rubble by artillery fire - only a mound marks its presence today. Located on the Bapaume road, nearly 500 yards to the north-east of the village, the position represented the highest point of the Pozières Ridge (160 metres above sea level). For its possession, and the observation it afforded over the battlefield, the Australians suffered enormous casualties.
