The Battle of the Ancre was the 63rd (Royal Naval) Division's first major operation on the Western Front (it had previously served in Gallipoli). A prominent part in the Division's success on 13 and 14 November was the inspirational leadership provided by Lieutenant-Colonel Freyberg of Hood Battalion who, by skill, courage and improvisation, kept the momentum of the advance going. Wounded many times in the fighting he was subsequently awarded the Victoria Cross.
