A greater weight of 'metal' supported the Ancre attack than had been available for the Fourth Army on 1 July. Ruses to deceive the enemy included a programme of routine intense bouts of firing just before dawn - this was observed as normal on 13 November except that the intense barrage then screened the actual infantry attack - which in some sectors so surprised defenders they were captured in, or as they emerged from, their dugouts.
