The Ypres Salient - CWGC

149th (Northumberland) Brigade (commanded by Brigadier-General J F Riddell) comprised: 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th Battalions of the Northumberland Fusiliers (the 5th Battalion did not take part in the 26 April attack as it had been sent that morning to reinforce the line at Fortuin). The remaining three battalions of the Brigade, supported by Canadian artillery, co-operated at very short notice with the Lahore Division's advance, but were caught by German machine-gun fire en-route to its start line; without support from the badly damaged 10th Brigade the 149th Brigade suffered terrible casualties in a vain advance which despite the desperate heroism of the attackers failed to get near the German positions. Brigadier-General Riddell was killed and the Brigade's total casualties (killed, wounded and missing) totalled 42 officers and 1,912 other ranks.
