The Ypres Salient - CWGC

German attacks on the right of 85th Brigade were initially repulsed north of the railway line but the enemy gradually exploited progress southwards and drove the 3rd Royal Fusiliers from their trenches north of Bellewaarde Lake. Survivors rallied in the third line trenches, behind what was left of Railway Wood and managed to hold on all day. South of the lake units of 2nd Cavalry Brigade, badly affected by the gas, held the line against increasing German pressure. Around 10am German infantry broke through the front of the 18th Hussars between Hooge and Bellewaarde. Crucially the 9th Lancers improvised a flank defence and kept the attackers off. (Many men of the 18th Hussars had never before seen action, being replacements for the unit's heavy casualties incurred on 13 May. Coming out of action on 24 May the 18th Hussars comprised a mere six officers and 57 men - the remainder having been killed, wounded or gone missing).
