The Ypres Salient - CWGC

General Sir Hubert Gough's appointment (by Field Marshal Haig) as controller of the new offensive necessitated the move of Fifth Army from Artois to the Ypres Salient. Additionally, and in response to French willingness to assist in the campaign, the French First Army, under General Anthoine, was inserted to the immediate left of units of British Fifth Army. All this took considerable time and the ensuing delays meant not only the loss of invaluable summer campaigning weather but also allowed the Germans better to perfect their already extensive and formidable in-depth defences based on mutually supporting ferro-concrete constructed strongpoints and pillboxes.
