The Ypres Salient - CWGC

British successes included the occupation of Pilckem Ridge (including Pilckem village); St Julien and Frezenberg were captured, as were Bellewaarde Ridge, Hooge, Sanctuary Wood and (part of) Shrewsbury Forest. On the left of Fifth Army (in the north) two Divisions of the French First Army advanced well to regain Bixschoote. On the right (in the south) Second Army troops got well forward to provide a solid southern flank. Around 6,000 German prisoners were taken on the first full day of the fighting.
