A vital factor in Gough’s eagerness to maintain the offensive was his ongoing commitment to his perceived responsibility for attempting a breakthrough northwards (across the Passchendaele Ridge) in order to coincide with the planned assault by Rawlinson’s forces along the coast. He had in fact issued operational orders for the renewal of the offensive as early as the evening of the 31 July – but lack of available fresh troops and persistent unfavourable weather conditions led to repeated cancellations of the main attack.
