In the north of the battlefield the 20th (Light) and 29th and Divisions, with the French on their left, took all their set objectives - which included the by now shattered remains of Langemarck, described by the Official Historian as little more than 'a water-covered swamp.' Not without difficulty British troops eventually consolidated positions some little way beyond the 'village'.
