French and British troops resting after digging trenches on Pilckem RidgeIn the north of the battlefield the 20th (Light) and 29th and Divisions, with the French on their left, took all their set objectives - which included the by now shattered remains of Langemarck, described by the Official Historian as little more than 'a water-covered swamp.' ('Military Operations. France and Belgium, 1917' (Volume II), compiled by Brigadier-General Sir James E Edmonds, London, HMSO, 1948, p.200).

Not without difficulty British troops eventually consolidated positions some little way beyond the 'village'.
