The Ypres Salient - CWGC

Plumer’s initial reluctance to take over the main responsibility for the battle was substantially overcome by Haig’s agreement to a ‘lull’ in offensive operations in order for Second Army to make all necessary preparations for its main role in a successful move against the Gheluvelt Plateau (supported on its left by the associated attacking formations of Fifth Army). Second Army’s frontage was now extended northwards to include control over II Corps.
