The Ypres Salient - CWGC

‘The defence of the captured ground had been consolidated as soon as the successive objectives were gained. Large stocks of German shovels and wire found in the area were of service. The selected strongpoints were generally a German pillbox or machine-gun emplacement, and machine-guns placed in front of them formed the framework.' ('Military Operations. France and Belgium, 1917' (Volume II), compiled by Brigadier-General Sir James E Edmonds, London, HMSO, 1948, p.271).
