The Ypres Salient - CWGC

A machine gun company's anti-aircraft outpost in a shallow hole in desolate ground at Nonne BosschenThese numerous violent actions reflected the seriousness with which the Germans viewed the British advance up the Plateau and demonstrated their acute concern to regain their lost positions. The German counter-attacks culminated in a major assault launched on an 1,800 yard sector south of Polygon Wood in the early morning of 25 September. This attack coincided with the relief of the British 23rd Division by units of the 33rd Division - with very serious consequences for the latter in connection with its designated role in the impending British offensive. The German 25 September attack, eventually beaten off with heavy loss, was a clear attempt at a pre-emptive strike, designed to delay preparations for Plumer's second step up the Gheluvelt Plateau. In this it failed, but the damage it did to 98th Brigade significantly affected its capacity to fulfil its supporting role to the 5th Australian Division on the following day.
