The Ypres Salient - CWGC

Members of 13th Australian Field Ambulance sheltering in funk holes along Anzac ridgeI Anzac Corps for this operation designated the 5th Australian Division (commanded by Major-General J Talbot Hobbs) and the 4th Australian Division (commanded by Major-General E G Sinclair-Maclagan) to carry out the main attack. Each Division was to have an attack frontage of 1,000 yards. Indisputably happier under the control of Plumer, with his thorough and reliable Second Army Staff, the enthusiastic Australians displayed considerable skill and resource in dealing with difficult German positions in the ensuing operations during which they incurred 5,770 casualties (killed, wounded and missing).
