The Ypres Salient - CWGC

Tasked with supporting the main assault Fifth Army's formations were disposed to the left (north) of II Anzac Corps as follows: XVIII Corps (48th and 11th Divisions, who were to move up the Passchendaele spur); XIV Corps (4th, 29th and the Guards Divisions) to advance in a more north-easterly direction, following the line of the Ypres-Staden railway east of Poelcappelle. Protection for the northern flank of Fifth Army operations was supplied by an advance (well-supported by artillery) of units of the French First Army.
