The Ypres Salient - CWGC

II Anzac Corps assault was to be supported on the left by simultaneous advances by formations of Fifth Army. British XVIII Corps 9th (Scottish) Division was confronted with a similarly long and difficult advance (2,000 yards) to the main ridge north of the Goudberg re-entrant; 18th (Eastern) Division would move forward to the left (north of the Lekkerboterbeek). At the extreme left of the battlefield XIV Corps (4th, 17th and Guards Divisions) would offer northern flank support by advances astride the Ypres-Staden railway and towards edges of the Houthulst Forest.
