The Ypres Salient - CWGC

By the eve of the First Battle of Ypres (18/19 October) British forces were extended over a long line of discontinuous front, from Ypres in the north to La Bassée in the south. Effectively five Infantry Divisions and three Cavalry Divisions of the British Expeditionary Force were stretched along an extended front of 35 miles. This allowed for defence roughly six miles to each Division and 600 yards to each Cavalry Brigade.
