The Ypres Salient - CWGC

The operations which eventually bore the official title 'The Battle of Langemarck' included the German assaults towards Bixschoote, Kortekeer and Langemarck itself, against defensive positions manned by units of the British I Corps (notably the 1st and 2nd Infantry Divisions). The British Official History extends its detailed description of the battle to include the activities of IV Corps around Zandvoorde. The heavy casualties inflicted on the attacking German infantry (from largely inexperienced and untried German Reserve Divisions) were to become the source of a potent myth.
