The Ypres Salient - CWGC

The failure of the German Fourth Army's desperate attempts to break through the defensive positions of British I and IV Corps in the 'Langemarck battle' fighting, resulted, on the evening of 24 October, in the German decision to call off heavy mass attacks in this sector and prepare for a new offensive further south. For this operation a specially committed force of two Army corps was placed under the control of General von Fabeck, with the intention of breaking the Ypres defences between Gheluvelt and Messines.
