By 25 October British forces occupied the southern half of the deeply irregular semi-circle of crude defensive positions around Ypres, the northern sector being defended by French units – the rough point of junction being Zonnebeke. During the period 25 to 28 October the Allied commanders, still failing to grasp the overwhelming superiority of German forces facing them, determinedly attempted minor offensive movements. Indeed one such foray was planned for 29 October which coincided with the German attack on Gheluvelt.
