The Ypres Salient - CWGC

This small village (having a peace-time population of 1,611 inhabitants) four miles east of Ypres occupied an important position on a spur (eastward extension) of the Messines-Passchendaele ridge and gave British forces good observation east of the ridge. To deprive the British of this advantage and assist control of the fighting in the central sector east of Ypres the Germans made a determined bid for its occupation at the outset of the grand attack on 29 October.
