The Ypres Salient - CWGC

Later that afternoon Haig (commanding I Corps) sanctioned an orderly withdrawal, after dark, to newly prepared defensive positions just over 600 yards west Gheluvelt. Responding to requests from Foch and the Commander-in-Chief of the BEF, Sir John French, Haig, in the evening of 31 October instructed his Divisional commanders to hold their positions. There would be no retreat.
