The Ypres Salient - CWGC

Many rehearsals were held by the assault Brigades in back areas, and a massive model of the Ridge ('the size of two croquet lawns') was constructed near Scherpenberg to allow all those taking part to see their objectives and the inter-relationships of the attacking groups. Additionally, the participating Divisions made smaller models of the ground relating to their own sectors of advance. The weeks before the battle saw many British trench raids to harass the enemy and gain information; in the final nights before the attack shallow assembly trenches were carefully constructed in no man's land.
