The Ypres Salient - CWGC

MG section, Northumberland Hussars, Ypres-Menin Road, October 19147th Infantry Division (part of General Rawlinson's IV Corps) arrived in Ypres on 14 October, the day after the arrival of the 3rd Cavalry Division, the first British troops to garrison the town. The 3rd Cavalry Division included the Northumberland Hussars (Yeomanry) who could claim to be the first Territorial unit to see action on the Western Front (near Poezelhoek, between Gheluvelt and Becelaere, about four miles east of Ypres on 21 October 1914), an achievement which is sometimes overlooked in favour of the actions of the London Scottish at Messines at the end of October. It should be noted that IV Corps was originally formed to provide assistance to the Belgian Army for the defence of Antwerp; following the capitulation of that city the Corps covered the flank of the Belgian Field Army during its enforced retreat to the line of the River Yser.
