The Ypres Salient - CWGC

The two French divisions occupied a flank facing north, almost at right angles to the general direction of the Allied defensive line. The 45th (Algerian) Division, immediately to the left of the 1st Canadian Division, held just over one mile of this sector of front; the remaining three-and-a-half miles (to the point where the Belgian forces took responsibility for the line) was manned by the 87th (Territorial) Division. Neither formation was regarded as an elite fighting force.
