Today marks the 75th anniversary of Operation Chastise, better known as the Dambusters Raid – one of the most audacious and technically difficult bombing operations of the Second World War.

A burial service was today held for a First World War soldier whose body was found more than a century after he was killed on the first day of the Battle of Messines.

This week (12-20 May) is National Cemeteries Week, which raises awareness of volunteer groups throughout the UK who help keep local cemeteries tidy and safe. More than 170,000 men and women who died in the UK, while serving in the armed forces during the First and Second World Wars, are buried in cemeteries and churchyards throughout the country. Some burials form small war graves plots within larger cemeteries, but the majority are scattered throughout cemetery grounds, many of which are maintained by the Commission with help from local groups.
