The two world wars resulted in unimagined loss and few people in the countries that took part remained unaffected. The men and women who gave their lives served in many different roles on land, at sea and in the air.

The graves of those who fell and the memorials to those with no known grave provide a unique insight into our history. Read more about the key events during the First and Second World Wars and where those who died are commemorated today.

The aim of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission’s archive is to collect, manage and preserve materials which document the history of our organisation, the individuals we commemorate and the cemeteries and memorials we maintain. We welcome visitors to our archive, which is based at the CWGC Head Office in Maidenhead, Berkshire.
