Leyton Orient Somme Tour

More than 200 Leyton Orient supporters and friends of the club will be visiting the CWGC Thiepval Memorial on Saturday 23 June 2018 to lay a wreath in memory of Private William Jonas, centre forward of Clapton Orient FC who was one of the three Orient players killed during the Battle of the Somme. More than 40 players, staff and supporters of Clapton Orient volunteered to join to the 17th Battalion Middlesex Regiment - The Footballers' battalion.

In May 1940, an aircraft was shot down in the Hamegicourt area. The crew are buried in Hamegicourt Churchyard. On 23 June, a service will be held in their memory with the family of Sgt Barrett in attendance.

A service of rededication for the crew of Lancaster DS678 will be held in the Commission’s Niederzwehren Cemetery near Kassel in Germany.

The annual Royal British Legion Somme service at the CWGC Thiepval Memorial will take place from 11am. All veterans, friends, family and guests are welcome to attend.

A rededication Service for Lieutenant Charles Stonehouse, of 11th Battalion, East Lancashire Regiment, will take place at Serre Road Cemetery No.3.

A rededication Service for Private Frederick William Birks, of 17th Battalion, The King’s (Liverpool Regiment), will take place at Perth Cemetery (China Wall).

A rededication service for Private Robert Oliver Bowness, of 4th Australian Pioneers, will take place at Villers-Bretonneux Military Cemetery.

The Canadian Armed Forces participation in their 66th Nijmegen Marches serves as a reminder of their past and current commitment, through NATO, to European peace and security. Members of the Canadian Armed will highlight, in particular, Canada's continued and unique connection to the Netherlands. As members of the Canadian Military contingent march through regions of the Netherlands where previously Canadians fought during the Second World War, they will remember and honour their bravery and reflect on those who continue to proudly serve Canada today. A remembrance ceremony at the Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery in the Netherlands will be held in the presence of other Nations participating in the 4DAAGSE International Marches.

This ceremony will pay tribute to the Acadian soldiers who fought during the Battle of Normandy and gave their lives for the liberty of France.

After an enforced absence of more than 12 years, staff from the Commission have made a historic return to Iraq.

Today (15 June) marks 100 years since Edward Harold Brittain – the brother of writer and Voluntary Aid Detachment (V.A.D.) nurse Vera Brittain – was killed in action while serving on the Italian Front.

Friday (15 June) will mark 100 years since the start of the Battle of the Piave River. Fought between 15 and 23 June 1918, the battle was a victory for the Italian army against the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
