Burials and Rededication Services in October 2018

The following burial and rededication services are due to be held at CWGC cemeteries in October 2018.

Tyne Cot Cemetery, Belgium

 

Tuesday 9 October

Rededication Ceremony for Lieutenant John Gillis Butt at Hooge Crater Cemetery

A rededication service for Lieutenant John Gillis Butt, Royal Army Medical Corps, will take place at 10:00 on Tuesday 9 October 2018 at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission’s Hooge Crater Cemetery near Ypres in Belgium.

Lieutenant Butt was attached to 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards when he was killed near Gheluvelt on 29 October 1914 during the First Battle of Ypres.

The CWGC will mark his grave with a new headstone bearing his name and a personal inscription chosen by his family.

The service has been organised by the Joint Casualty and Compassionate Centre, Ministry of Defence and will be attended by family members, British Defence Staff, Regimental representatives, CWGC staff and local dignitaries. Members of the public are welcome to attend.

 

Rededication Ceremony for Lance Corporal Leonard Thomas Courtney at Stasegem Communal Cemetery.

A rededication service for Lance Corporal Leonard Thomas Courtney, 4th Battalion Worcestershire Regiment, will take place at 14:30 on Tuesday 9 October 2018 at Stasegem Communal Cemetery in Belgium. Lance Corporal Courtney was killed on 20 October 1918, just three weeks before the end of the First World War.

The CWGC will mark his grave with a new headstone bearing his name and a personal inscription chosen by his family.

The service has been organised by the Joint Casualty and Compassionate Centre, Ministry of Defence and will be attended by family members, British Defence Staff, Regimental representatives, CWGC staff and local dignitaries. Members of the public are welcome to attend.

 

 

Wednesday 10 October

Rededication Ceremonies for Private George Skilbeck and Second Lieutenant Norman Frederic Surry at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission’s Montay-Neuvilly Road Cemetery.

A joint rededication service for Private George Skilbeck, Royal Army Medical Corps and Second Lieutenant Norman Frederic Surry, 16thBattalion King’s Royal Rifle Corps will be held at 11:30 on Wednesday 10 October 2018 at the Commonwealth war Graves Commission’s Montay-Neuvilly Road Cemetery in France.

Private Skilbeck was serving with 53rd Field Ambulance when he was killed between the front line at Neuvilly and the village of Inchy on 11 October 1918. Second Lieutenant Surry was killed on 12 October 1918 during an attack on the Le Cateau to Solesmes railway line near Troisvilles.

The CWGC will mark the two graves with new headstones bearing their names and a personal inscription chosen by their families.

The services have been organised by the Joint Casualty and Compassionate Centre, Ministry of Defence and will be attended by family members, British Defence Staff, Regimental representatives, CWGC staff and local dignitaries. Members of the public are welcome to attend.

 

 

Wednesday 24 October

Burial Ceremony for members of the crew of Halifax JP 244 at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission’s Tirana Cemetery, Albania

A burial ceremony will be held at Tirana Cemetery, Albania at 12:00 on Wednesday 24 October 2018 for members of the crew of Halifax JP 244.

Halifax JP244 of 148 Sqn took off from RAF Brindisi, Italy on 29 October 1944 to carry out a supply dropping mission, but nothing further was heard from the crew. Remains were found within the wreckage of the plane following wildfires in 2017 and they will be buried with military honours on 24 October.

The CWGC will mark the grave with a headstone dedicated to members of the crew of JP244.

The service has been organised by the Joint Casualty and Compassionate Centre, Ministry of Defence and will be attended by family members, British Defence Staff, Regimental representatives and local dignitaries. Members of the public are welcome to attend.
