Lest We Forget was a National Lottery Heritage Funded project in collaboration with the University of Oxford to create a digital archive of the First World War artefacts stored in bedrooms and attics across the UK. Members of the public from across the country brought their family heirlooms to collection days to be digitised and included in this project.

About the Project

The Lest We Forget project supported volunteer-led community collection days around the country. Members of the public brought their First World War stories and artefacts to be recorded and photographed by our teams of experts and volunteers. We are preserving these memories of the Great War for future generations by including them in our freely available, public online archive.

The Archive

The archive opened on 11 November 2018, and contains over 800 stories we've collected of from First World War. These stories come from all over the UK, and they tell not only the stories of individuals who served on the Western Front, Mesopotamia, India, North Africa and those on the Home Front, but they also shed a light on the lives of bereaved families, returning soldiers and the how the war has been remembered ever since.

How can I get involved?

Thank you for your interest in the Lest We Forget project. Unfortunately, no more events are planned and our online submission site is closed, but you can still contribute! Copies of all the images and stories we have collected have also been sent to the comprehensive Europeana 1914-1918 archive, and you can submit any new objects directly to them. Further information and instructions can be found on the Europeana website (a free account is required to submit stories).
