We work with local schools and community organisations, supporting their projects through information, publicity and staff support. We also develop our own projects and work in collaboration with partners.

Here are some projects we have proudly supported:

Living Memory

LM Logo

In 2016, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of The Battle of the Somme, we co-funded an initiative with the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG), to support community groups in visiting their local First World War graves. We worked with the Big Ideas Company, and asked communities to help us hold 141 events to mark the 141 days of the battle. Two hundred and sixty groups held events and researched the Somme casualties. Images from Living Memory in partnership with Big Ideas Company.

Never Such Innocence

Never Such Innocence

Never Such Innocence is a national charity set up to engage young people in the First World War commemorations through creative arts. It runs an annual poetry, art, and music competition for nine to 16 year olds worldwide for each year of the centenary. Salonika Remembers

The British Council in Greece and CWGC are working together with more than 100 school teachers to explore the history of the Salonika campaign and the CWGC sites in Greece. Salonika Remembers is a project for schools, which aims to mark the centenary of the Salonika Campaign 1915-18. Salonika Remembers invites schools to visit and explore the CWGC cemeteries and the individual stories of those Commonwealth servicemen and women who are buried in Greece and to respond creatively to this experience through poetry, music and art.

Poppies: Wave - Plymouth

The Poppies: Wave was installed at the CWGC Plymouth Naval Memorial in the summer of 2017. Find out more here.

CWGC also supports local groups doing their own work, including:

Sutton Living Memory Group

The London Borough of Sutton WW1 Commemorations Steering Group has been awarded a Heritage Lottery Fund grant to research the war graves in the borough. The group has Facebook and Twitter pages and has made a short film about the project. It plans to work with volunteers from the community, including schools and cadet units, and set up sessions to explain how they can connect with the war graves. CWGC is supporting this project with research and information.
