In the late hours of Monday 14th April/early hours of Tuesday 15th April 1941 (this was the Easter Holiday which came to be known as "Black Easter") 15 Queen's Road, Portland was demolished by a World War two bomb killing 6 members of the Farwell family and an unborn child of about 8 months.

There would have been about nine members of this large family at Queen's Road on that night: Archer (dad), Nellie (mum), Charles Walter (Babe), his pregnant wife CHARLOTTE (Lottie), Marion (Dinah), Cecil (Albert), Lionel and Peter. Lottie had only recently married into the family in the early months of 1940 with the ceremony taking place at the Brackenbury Memorial Church.

Records show that her husband Walter Charles "Babe" Farwell was quite quickly then in Portsmouth in March waiting to be sent to France. He was evacuated from Dunkirk in May/June 1940.

Lottie was born on the Island on 21st January 1921 to Alfred and Sarah Smith. She lived next door to her future husband's family and was one of eleven children, one of whom Alfred (but called Bill), was her twin. Family memory recalls her being a tiny little thing , full of the joys of spring who loved singing. The two families were obviously very close with Lottie being very good friends with Babe's sister Violet.

On the day of her funeral her 20 year old twin Bill picked yellow primroses from the side of the road which he laid on her grave. The grave at st George's has now been planted with many yellow primroses courtesy of the wonderful volunteer's at St George's church, Reforne. The primroses have since been tended and when necessary replanted by her niece Avril.
