Civilian Gilbert Harriott, was born at Barcombe in 1860, the son of Henry and Alice Harriott. The 1860 census records the family living "Near Cooksbridge". Henry was an agricultural
labourer, aged 50, born at Chailey. Alice, aged 38, was born at Barcombe, as were the recorded children. Frederick, aged 17, a carter, Thomas, aged 16 and Henry, aged 14 were both
agricultural labourers, Trayton, aged 11, Sarah, aged 7, Ernest, aged 5, Agnes, aged 2 and Gilbert, aged 5 months.
In 1881, Gilbert was a boarder at Bunces Cottage, the home of agricultural labourer George Packham.
Gilbert married Alice Howell on the 17th of April 1886 at St Martin’s Church, Brighton.The marriage register records Gilbert as a miller residing at East Chiltington. His father was a
farm labourer. Alice was residing at 65, Park Crescent Road, Brighton, the daughter of Richard Howell, a game keeper.
In 1891 he and Alice were living in Plumpton Lane, Plumpton. Two children are recorded; Alice, aged 2 and Henry, aged 1.
The 1901 census records Gilbert with his family at 2, Mill Cottages, Plumpton, employed as a mill loader. Alice, aged 41, was born at East Chiltington. Children recorded were Alice,
aged 12, Henry, aged 11 and Gilbert, aged 8, all born at Plumpton.
In the 1911 census, the family were living at Wales Farm, Plumpton. Gilbert was now a head cowman; he and Alice had been married for twenty four years and had produced the
three children previously mentioned, all of which were still alive. Alice (Junior) was now a dairy maid and Gilbert was a gardener at a nursery; Henry was not included in the census.
(*) Gilbert Junior served the First World War as Lance Serjeant 3363 Gilbert Harriott, of the 13th Battalion, the Royal Sussex Regiment and was killed in action in France, on the 13th
of May 1916 and is buried in the Le Touret Military Cemetery, Richebourg L'Avoue Cemetery. He is remembered on the grave of his parents.
Alice died on the 5th of November 1938 - her probate records her estate being administered to Gilbert, who is noted as a retired carter. In 1940, Gilbert was living in the village at
Crossgates. On the 22nd of December 1940, whilst in the vicinity of Riddens Cottages, in Riddens Lane, a bomb exploded close by, the shock of which killed Gilbert and injured a boy
named David Upton.
