John (Brother of Robert Peat of the 4th Border Regiment)was born in Galgate, Lancaster on the 28th February 1917; he was a market garden assistant before he joined the Border Regiment around 1940.
In September 1942, the 1st Border Regiment became an Airlanding unit which means the men were flown in Gliders! John served in the Sicily airborne landings and then in the Arnhem operation in which he died. He was wounded around 19 September during desperate fighting and passed away in a field Hospital on 20 September 1944, being buried nearby.
Annie Clarke (later remarried becoming Mrs Walker), married John Peat during a five-day leave. She saw him twice more, each time on a 48 Pass and that was all the time they had together as man and wife.
