Corporal John Southward, 63478, 3rd Bn., Machine Gun Corps (Infantry)

John was the Son of Mr & Mrs Robert Southward, Chapel Street, Galgate, and had been employed at White Cross Mills.
He enlisted in July 1916 and had been in France for 16 months at the time of his death. At some point, he transferred from the King's Own to the newly formed Machine Gun Corps (MGC). He had a brother and two cousins serving in France, and another cousin at Salonika at the time of his death.
John’s obituary appeared in the Lancaster Guardian dated 27 April 1918, page 6, and he was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
He is commemorated on the Ellel War memorial.
