Janice Margaret Harrington was born on the 28 November 1920, the daughter of Arthur George and Xenia Ivy Vivienne Harrington, of Bedford.

Janice attended Bedford High School becoming a school and house prefect, and was described as being “original, ingenious and enterprising”. At 18 she moved to Gloucester Training College, later becoming a teacher of Domestic Science at the Silver Jubilee School in Bedford. She played lacrosse for the 1st XII at school and college.

Janice joined the ATA (Air Transport Auxiliary) in July 1943. She was considered too short to be a pilot and served as a Flight Engineer, ferrying aircraft to their combat units. Janice was one of 4 female Flight Engineers in the ATA.

One instructor commented: "this girl is very keen, intelligent and enthusiastic about her work, and will make a very competent Flt Engineer... She has a thorough knowledge of the Halifax and is quite capable of carrying out the duties of Flight Engineer on this aircraft ... Discipline has been excellent."

Sadly, Janice died in an aircraft crash on 4 March 1944, alongside her pilot, Dora Lang. Her Mosquito Mk VI (serial HP 932) crashed on an undershot approach at Lasham, stalling on climb out causing the aircraft to spin into the ground. Janice was 23.

She is buried in Maidenhead (All Saints) Cemetery Sec D Row W grave 19 next to her pilot Dora Lang.
