One of two Beveridge brothers to lose their lives in World War Two.

Flight Sergeant Alan Reid Beveridge RAFVR (748353), served with RAF 10 Squadron.

On 13 March 1941 he was the second pilot of an Armstrong Whitworth Whitley type V, serial Z6496 bomber. The aircraft took off from RAF Dishforth at 20.35hrs to bomb Hamburg in Germany. The aircraft was struck by flak and considerably damaged but managed to return safely to RAF Leeming at 03.35hrs. 

On 1 July 1941 whilst returning from a mission to bomb Duisburg in Germany, the aircraft that he was piloting, Armstrong Whitely type V, serial Z6584 was shot down near Thetford in Norfolk.

Flight Sergeant Beveridge was a former pupil of Dundee High School and Perth Academy. He was 21 years old and the second son of Mr. and Mrs John Graham and Grace Webster Beveridge who ran the Panmure Hotel in Monefieth after having been in business in Perth.

Flight Sergeant Beveridge is buried in the family grave (458) at Dunbarney Cemetery, Bridge of Earn.

His brother, Flight Lieutenant Robert Graham Webster Beveridge RAFVR (86337) was also killed in action on 14 April 1942 whilst serving with RAF 39 squadron in Malta. Robert Beveridge flying his Bristol Beaufort N1169 twin engine torpedo bomber was shot down at 17.45pm by enemy aircraft after attacking an Italian convoy. The crew of N1169 was lost, it was just one of 6 Beauforts that was lost on that mission.

BEVERIDGE.- In action recently, Sgt. Pilot Alan Reid Beveridge, R.A.F., second son of Mr and Mrs Beveridge, Rowanbank, 44 Camphill Road, Broughty Ferry. Funeral to-day (Sat.), to Dunbarney Cemetery, Bridge of Earn, arriving 3 p.m. Friends wishing to attend please meet cortege at cemetery gate.”

“AIRMAN KILLED"

 “Sergt.-Pilot Alan Reid Beveridge, 44 Camphill Road, Broughty Ferry, has been killed on the return journey from an operational flight. He was 21 and was the second son of Mr and Mrs J. G. Beveridge, who ran the Panmure Hotel, Monifieth, after having been in business in Perth. Sergt. Beveridge, educated at Perth Academy and Dundee High School, had intended making flying his career and trained at Perth with the R.A.F.V.R. along with his elder brother, Graham, now a pilot-officer. Both were called up at the outbreak.”

“LAST TRIBUTE TO AIRMAN - PARENTS WELL-KNOWN IN PERTH"

“Sergeant-Pilot Alan Reid Beveridge, who died as the result of enemy action and was laid to rest in Dunbarney Churchyard during the week-end, was the second son of Mr and Mrs John Beveridge, Broughty Ferry, late of Perth and Bridge of Earn."

“Deep sympathy is felt for his parents, who are well-known in both districts. Sergt.-Pilot Beveridge’s elder brother is a Pilot Officer in the R.A.F."

“Representatives of the R.A.F. and the Royal Navy were among the many mourners who attended the funeral, and the floral tributes included a wreath from the R.A.F. squadron to which the deceased was attached.”
