Born 1895 in Galgate, Alfred was the youngest son of Mr James & Mrs Margaret Ellen Myerscough, of 8 Makinsons Row Galgate nr Lancaster; his sister was Mary Dobson, and his brothers were James Stewart, Joseph, and John. Alfred was educated at the National school, Galgate, and was a member of St Mary’s Choir, Ellel Grange.

In 1911, he was employed as edge minder at the White Cross Oilcloth Mill where he had worked for 7 or 8 years.

Alfred enlisted in April 1917 and went to France later that year in October. His unit, 122 Siege Battery RGA, first went to France on 18 July 1916.In March 1918 122 Siege Battery was part of Third Army assigned to 66 Brigade RGA and was equipped with 6” Howitzers.

In the confusion of the German attacks in the opening days of the 1918 German Spring Offensive, artillery units were often overrun and were fighting as Infantry. Many men were subsequently lost track of and Alfred’s obituary states that his parents heard nothing from him for six weeks prior to the official notification of his death. Two brothers were also serving at the time of his death according to the obituary.

Alfred was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. He is commemorated on the Ellel war memorial.
