Eric was born in Lancaster in 1917 and Eric lived at 1 Milking Stile Lane in 1939. There was obviously an Ellel connection as his family were presented with a memorial scroll - his wife as it turned out though was Galgate born and bred.
Eric went to France in 1939 with the BEF (350 Battery, 88th Field regiment - assigned as 2nd Corps Artillery) and was evacuated from Dunkirk.
Eric married Cicely (nee Holland) in Lancaster in June 1941, before embarkation for the Far East. Cicely was the youngest sister of Frank Holland who died in 1917 . Cicely (born 1912) worked at the Silk Mill as a gasser and in 1939 lived at Saxon Lea, Makinsons Row - Hence Eric's connection with Galgate! Her father and mother also lived there, having moved from London Terrace at some point. In 1943 Cicely was still living at Saxon Lea, Galgate and Eric’s father lived at 1, Beechfield Terrace, Marsh, Lancaster (his mother Elizabeth died in December 1941 and his father in September 1943) was married for one week before he went off to Singapore.
After landing in Malaya and capture at Singapore with his new unit, Eric died working on the notorious death railway in Thailand. He is commemorated on the Lancaster and Ellel War memorials.
