Displayed Conspicuous Gallantry when he carried messages under heavy fire

9199 Lance Corporal Percy Gunner DCM was born at Worplesdon, Surrey, and enlisted at Tregantle, Cornwall. He would have been a Regular soldier who had enlisted prior to 1914. He served in France and Flanders with the 1st Battalion, Somerset Light Infantry from 21 August 1914 as part of the British Expeditionary Force, later transferring to the 8th Battalion. 

He won the Distinguished Conduct Medal which is listed in the London Gazette dated 14 January 1916. The Gazette dated 11 March 1916 gives the citation ‘For conspicuous gallantry, when he carried important messages under heavy fire. He has been previously recommended for his bravery and ability, on an occasion when he took command of his platoon after all the non-commissioned officers had been killed or wounded.’

He died on 6 December 1915 and is buried at Chapelle-D'Armentiers New Military Cemetery 1.5 km west of Armentieres in northern France. His age is not recorded in the Commission's records.

He was also Mentioned in Despatches in connection with action in the Armentieres-Ypres area, this was listed in the London Gazette of 17 February 1915, which covers the period 11 October to 2 November 1914. He was also awarded the Russian Medal of St George 4th Class which is listed in the London Gazette 25 August 1915.

Percy was killed in action near Armentieres on 6 December 1915. He is buried in Chapelle d’Armentieres New Military Cemetery.
