"LUNCARTY OFFICER MISSING...a student at St. Andrews University before joining the Forces and had served in North Africa before crossing to Normandy.”

Perthshire Advertiser, 15th July 1944

“LUNCARTY OFFICER MISSING"

“Notification has been received by Rev. G. S. Gilmour and Mrs Gilmour, Luncarty Manse, that their son, Lieut. Ian D. Gilmour, Gordon Highlanders, is missing, believed wounded in Normandy."

“Following the official message, a letter has been received from his C.O. stating that Lieut. Gilmour and his sergeant had gone out in advance of his company to remove several mines which were holding them up and both had been wounded by snipers. The sergeant had been ordered to retire by Lieut. Gilmour, who was himself unable to go back because of his wounds, and it is thought that he was made prisoner before his company were able to advance."

“He was a student at St. Andrews University before joining the Forces and had served in North Africa before crossing to Normandy.”

Perthshire Advertiser, 30th May 1945

“MINISTER’S SON BELIEVED DEAD"

“The Rev. G, S, Gilmour, B.D., and Mrs Gilmour, The Manse, Luncarty, have been informed by the War Office that their son, Lieut. I. D. Gilmour, Gordon Highlanders, is presumed to have died of wounds, on or after 13th June, 1944."

“Lieut. Gilmour was last seen on the above date on a reconnaissance patrol and was being fired on from very short range."

“A survivor of the patrol states that Lieut. Gilmour was badly wounded about the body by machine-gun fire, and after he had made him as comfortable as possible, he was instructed by Lieut. Gilmour to rejoin his unit with the information for which the patrol had been sent out."

“No further information has been obtained concerning Lieut. Gilmour, and with reluctance it has been concluded that he succumbed to his wounds."

“Previous to his enlistment, Lieut. Gilmour was a student at St Andrews University, whence he had proceeded from Perth Academy."

“The sympathy of a wide circle of friends in Luncarty and Abernethy, where Rev. Mr Gilmour is at present occupying the pulpit of the North Church, is expressed for Mr and Mrs Gilmour.”

Ian Gilmour is also commemorated on the Luncarty War Memorial, the Redgorton War Memorial & the University of St Andrews Roll of Honour.

COVID AND COMMEMORATIONS IN NORMANDY.

During the Covid Pandemic in 2020 it wasn't possible for people to make their normal pilgrimages to Normandy in June around the anniversary of D-Day

The CWGC offered to leave individual tributes at a number of their cemeteries and memorials on request and a cross was placed in front of the Bayeux Memorial in honour of Ian Gilmour.

In 2022 Mrs Catherine MacGregor, a teacher at Perth Academy, was able to visit the memorial with members of her extended family and leave a tribute on behalf of the school.
