William was educated at Wrekin College, Shropshire from 1936 to 1940.

Employed by the Westminster Bank Ltd on leaving school he volunteered for the Indian Army, leaving for India in August 1941.

Commissioned into the 3rd/5th Royal Gurkha Rifles, he went to Burma with his regiment where for a time he held the post of Battalion Quarter Master. 

William was a Company Officer in April 1943 when he was initially reported as ‘missing in action’ and later died whilst a POW in Rangoon Central Goal on Saturday 3rd July 1943 aged 21: cause of death was never discovered.

Son of William C Kirkpatrick & Elizabeth A Kirkpatrick of Braddan, Isle of Man. William is buried in Rangoon War Cemetery, Myanmar.
