John was born in Margate, Kent in about 1890, to Richard a RN pensioner and Elizabeth and in 1901 the family were living at 93 Kingswood Rd, Gillingham.

He enlisted in the 21st Lancers on 20th December 1909, and served in Egypt and India. Sadly John died on 24th November 1914 whilst serving with ‘A’ Squadron and was buried in the Nowshera Military Cemetery C.61.

His death is mentioned in ‘A’ Squadron notes in the Vedette on the 31st December 1914 however no cause is given but as he was in hospital at Nowshera it was probably from illness.
