"For gallantry and devotion to duty during the operations. Shortly after the attack commenced his Platoon Commander and nearly all his N.C.O.'s became casualties. Without any orders he assumed the role of leader, kept his men together and in good spirits, and greatly assisted in the consolidation of his Platoon Objectives. His cheerful confidence and practical foresight greatly inspired the men under him."
One of nine children, Joseph was one of the three sons born to Robert Patrickson and Lucy Ellen Patrickson (nee Brown). Born on 12th October 1893 he died two days after his 24th birthday in 1917.
He died in the Battle of Menin Road, Third Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele). His battalion was at Polygon Wood and suffered heavy casualties.
His Military Medal was Gazetted on 12th December 1917.
In 2018 his remains were discovered and he was identified via a mitochondrial sample. He is now buried at Tyne Cot Cemetery, Belgium.
Joseph's mother, Lucy Ellen Brown, was sister to my great, great grandmother, Sarah Brown.
