Born in Halifax like his father, in 1911 Robin lived in East View, Galgate, and was a joiner’s apprentice at a timber merchant.

Robin enlisted in the Army at Lancaster around 1912 and therefore was a Regular soldier. He gave his residence in 1914 as Knockaloe, Isle of Man – perhaps this was where his intended place of residence was.

The 12th Field Company RE was part of the 6th Division and was commanded by Major A. F. Sargeaunt, R.E in 1914.

It appears from the War diary that Sapper Stocks was wounded during operations on the 22nd November 1917, taken to the units dressing station and died whilst there.

Robin was awarded the 1914 star (he arrived in France on the 8 September 1914) the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. He was therefore an “Old Contemptible.”
