History information

Winchester was the Depot of the Hampshire Regiment, the King's Royal Rifle Corps and the Rifle Brigade; and the Magdalene Camp Military Hospital was on the hill East of the city. The City Cemetery is also at Magdalene Hill, outside the Borough boundaries and in the Winchester Rural District. The Hampshire County Memorial is opposite the West door of the Cathedral; and in the Cathedral is the Roll of Honour of the King's Royal Rifle Corps, containing 12,653 names.
