Location information

Sungei Patina is a small town 23 miles North of the port of Butterworth on the main road to Alor Star. The town has traditionally been associated with the Gurkhas due to the Training Depot for the Brigade of Gurkhas formerly situated here. There are two Gurkha cemeteries here, known as the Old Cemetery and the New Cemetery. They are both situated outside the rear perimeter fence of the old Gurkha Depot. This is 1 mile outside the town on the right hand side of the Kedah Road when proceeding North from the town. Access is through a gate in the depot fence leading on to a track. The New Cemetery is 100 yards along the track, then turn right and proceed a further 50 yards. The Old Cemetery is more difficult to access. It lies in a disused rubber estate, take the first track to the left on leaving the New Cemetery. About half a mile the Old Cemetery can be seen on the right on a hill some 100 yards off the track. Access can only be made on foot from here and the path is often wet and muddy.
