Anzio veteran and campaigner Harry Shindler has passed away

It is with sadness, the death of Harry Shindler OBE was announced last night, aged 101.

Born in 1921, Harry, a veteran of the Anzio landings and the liberation of Rome in 1944 settled in San Benedetto del Tronto, Italy after the war.

Working for the Italy Star Association, Harry helped commemorate the Anzio Landings and was committed to tracing the graves of servicemen killed or listed as missing in action in World War Two while constantly raising awareness of the fallen through talks at schools and universities.

He also tirelessly campaigned for Brits overseas to retain their ability to vote in British elections, ultimately founding the association of British Ex-Pats in Italy in 2010.

Described as “A fine example of the Bulldog spirit” for his commitment and tenacity, he was given honorary citizenship of San Benedetto del Tronto and in 2014 was awarded the MBE followed by an OBE in 2021.
