Black History Month events

This month we have been proud to host a series of Black History Month events at CWGC cemeteries and memorials across the south of England. Hosted in partnership with community groups and the armed forces, the events encouraged visitors to learn more about the war dead of Afro-Caribbean descent who are commemorated in the UK.

They included tours of the Runnymede Air Forces Memorial in Surrey, the graves of British West Indies Regiment casualties at Seaford Cemetery and the Hollybrook Memorial in Southampton, where the names of hundreds of missing personnel of African and Caribbean descent are commemorated.

Liz Woodfield, CWGC’s Director of External Relations, said: “We were delighted to welcome people to the commemorative events and tours that took place at CWGC sites for this year’s Black History Month.

“Across the UK, and indeed the world, CWGC’s sites tell the story of the truly global impact of the World Wars. Every community is represented in those we commemorate, and every community is welcomed to discover more about the Commonwealth men and women who gave their all.”
